Their thoughtful design even ensured the stars and stripes of the American flag are the correct dimensions. The design includes an eagle and American flag to represent the country, an arch and mountains to symbolize Saratoga’s history, a maltese cross and axe as a piece of fire service history, and finally, twenty-one stars to represent every person assigned to the Saratoga station. ![]() They built this table from the salvaged wood of a sugar pine tree that had been damaged on Tyler’s property during the Butte Fire. ![]() Not long after, Chris and Jay volunteered to build a dining table to gather around at the fire station. Coincidentally, they later learned one of the homes they protected belonged to a relative of another Santa Clara County firefighter, Tyler James. The fire ultimately reached their location, but thanks to the team’s effort, the fire did not damage any structures. They were assigned to protect multiple homes along the southern edge of the approaching fire. In September 2015, Chris and Jay were deployed to the Butte Fire in Amador County, one of the largest fires of the year. Their paths came together when they were both hired by the Santa Clara County Fire Department years later. Firefighter Paramedic Chris Alvies and Firefighter EMT Jay Graaskamp both grew up dreaming of becoming firefighters and positively impacting the lives of others. ![]()
